Armistice 1939

 Armistice 1939

Forget the battle and the strife,

The ancient quarrels and hatreds

Of alien nations and foreign races;

The sordid greed for glittering gold

Whose purchase price is blood untold.

Removed afar from war's alarm,

Our quiet shores and guiding light

To all the world, proclaims our might.

Armistice truce, a lasting peace becomes,

And crowns the labors of our sons.

An heritage far above all price,

Of mountain, plain and valley fair;

Of life, and love, and hope beyond compare

A precious birthright secure in Freedoms name;

Let all who breathe its worth a claim.

A. J. P.

Written when the hope of national security and

national sovereignty still burned brightly in the

hearts of many American citizens.
